About Sang Tong Huts

With a few changes since the opening of Sang Tong Huts on 25 December 1987. The Sang Tong Huts family are very happy and keen to continually nuture the life and soul of this much-loved treasure.
Nestled on a hillside on the outer adge of the Mae Hong Sorn township, Sang Tong Huts is the oldest orginal Guest House in the region.
Influences, inspirations, passions and lots of hard work from not only its Thai origins but also from Australia and Germany, have given Sang Tong Huts its unique character and long lasting appeal to our numerous guests.

Many arrive thinking of staying a night or two but soon realise this is the kind of place that is too hard to leave. This realisation comes from the:
- Peace, serenity and privacy offered by the landscaping and positioning of each hut
- Individual designs and structure, in local materials, of each bungalow
- Natrual decor and attention to detail within the hut
- the warmth of the fire at night, where guests enjoy music and company of their diverse peers and hosts
- The excellent cusine of local origins (for breakfast we also have familiar western)

The character you may encounter while enjoying your stay at Sang Tong Huts could be the following one:

This crazy guy you will not meet anymore. This was Pongpat Lertrachatapon, called Toe, born in Chiang Mai, grown up in Bangkok. He came in 1987 to Mae Hong Son, after a three-years stay in America. Together with his former wife, Lousie from Australia, he built up Sang Tong Huts. In January 1994 Louise left Thailand and went back to Australia. In November the same year Babs from Germany arrived and they fall in love. Toe studied soziologie and politics at Chiang Mai University, beside studying he played very sucessfully in a band in University.
After he finished the university he went to America and built up an import business for Thai products, but being afraid of an the earth quake he decide to return home after three years and settled down in Mae Hong Son.
Plants and the garden were Toe´s major subject in Sang Tong Huts. Kompost, kompost, kompost was his devise, and if you look what happend to the garden over the year, you will agree. He always had new ideas and projects going on, like the fish powns or his water project, to become independent of the expensive town suplay.
Toe died on 18th of June 2002 in Germany during a tumortreatment, his ash is in Mae Hong Song, so he can still twist our brains.
Toe
Babs This is Barbara Reichart, called Babs, from Nuremberg, Germany.
She came to Sang Tong Huts in November 1994, falled in love with Toe and since then she is travelling between Thailand and Germany. Babs studied Economic Science and took over the family bussiness. So it is not possible for her to stay in Thailand all the time. The mixture between this two countries is the better solution anyhow.
For her, Sang Tong Huts is a place to relax and to let her fantasy flow, in terms of designing the huts. She starts travelling very young, so she knows about the longing of the travellers abroad. Using her experiances she tries to make a place where guests feel very comfortable. For example the beding, she carried all the downblankets and the bedsheets over from Germany, also the bathrooms are her design.
Harmony in the interior design is a must for her. Many small things make complete the whole thing.
After Toe died it was clear that she will continue with Sang Tong Huts together with Louise and her sons
Louise mit Söhnen Louise and Toe started Sang Tong Huts in 1987.
Mason, Tobin and Orlando, their sons, were born in Mae Hong Son
In April 1994 she went back to Australia
After Toe died she and her sons also wanted to continue with Sang Tong Huts
So they comming back every year for Christmas.

The good minds of Sang Tong Huts

Pau This is Pau. She came in 2006 to Sang Tong Huts and is our manager, when we are not there. After the time of learning thoroughly she unterstood very quickly what we put an eye of: Cleaness, beauty and a deep love for Sang Tong Huts. So she became a part of the Sang Tong Huts family.
Beside taking care of the huts and the loundry she will look that you are never hungry. She is a phantastic cook and a good decorator.
Pau is born in Burma, where she had not much possibility to go to school. She came to Thailand around 20 years ago. She learned reading and writing Thai, but English is quiete difficult for her. So she asks Geang when ever she doesn´t understand our guests

This is Telu, the master of walls and roofs. All bamboo walls and floors, and all the beautiful roofs are done by him. He is Karen and still knows the old methods of doing this kind of work.
He is working for Sang Tong Huts for many years and knows more or less evry single stone.
Babs like to work with him, eventough they don´t speak the same language, but they understand each other very well, she talks German, he talks Karen, no problem, its a mindgame. Together they finished many projects successfully.
Telu also takes care about the garden and if things gets broken, he will repair them.
Telu is a free lence worker and needs a break after bussy days to recover.

Telu
Gowi This is Gowi, our master builder. He also works since many years for Sang Tong Huts and in the meantime he has his own construction company with some employees.
When ever we plan a new projects, we discuss it with him and Telu first. He is a multitalent: a carpenter, a electrician, he works with tiles and stones, anything you name it, he knows it.
Without him and his stuff, there would be no pool, no Babs and Toe´s house ...
He always has an open mind for our ideas and loves to make it come real. He likes to work for Sang Tong Huts, as it is never the same thing to do, always a challenge

The only disadvantage is that Gowi is always bussy .... so we have to wait ...

This is Geang, our good friend, who has a big faible for Sang Tong Huts.
Geang owns the Kodak Shop in town, is married and has two sons.
When we are not here he has an eye on the resort, taking care of the finance, pays the stuff and the bills. If Pau has difficulties in understanding the guests he helps.
Geang loves good design and coffee, so he is right with Sang Tong Huts.
