Plants and Animals in Sang Tong Huts

The protection and care about plants and animals is very important for us.
This is why we donīt use any chemicals or poissons, only natural compost as fertilizer. Cause of the change around us (all cleared up land), it is our aim to keep Sang Tong Huts like a oasis for butterflies, birds and plants and they like it. You can see many different kinds now.

Wild Animals

Here you can see some of the wild animals, who are living in Sang Tong Huts. A frequently asked questions is, wether we have snakes, yes there are snakes but you donīt see them often, cause they very shy. We try to live and keep the nature, so we have all kind of animals. If you walk slow and give them time to hide themselves, you will not have a problem, and you now the snakes donīt like the humans either.

This are two tourtles, we rescued at the market. In 1998 Toe start to love and built fish ponds. There is one next to the kitchenhouse and one near Charlies hut. Both of them have a banch around, so you can sit down and watch the fish, especially in the night with the lighting it invides you for watching "television".

The Dogs

Dogs are our passion. This is why Sang Tong Huts not a place for people who donīt like dogs, cause as the years gone by we got quite a lot, better said the population is flexible, around ten of these little basters are living here and this is why they got an extra page.
Only one of them are not born and grown up in Sang Tong Huts. We care and treat like in the western countries and want to show and teach Thai people, that a dog can be your best friend, eventhough it is not a race dog, only a simple Thai mix.
Pau is cooking for them everday, if they are sick the vat will be called and off corse they get their vacination against rabies and distemper every year. Minimum once a month they have a bath. This is why the look very health, well cared-for and have a lot of self-confidence. Some Thais asked us whether we brought this dogs from Germany and our answer is always the same: No, this are just normal Thai dogs, treated well. We hope we can show the people a little bit about animal protection and teach them to treat the animals well. There are so many poor and sick dogs in Thailand, so that we think if we live in a paradise our dogs should have a little paradise too.
As we have around 9 female dogs the birth controll has to be included. Only the two young ones are not sterilized yet. This should also show that the yearly poisson-the-dogs-session is not the right solution for the overpopulation of dogs.
Off corse this makes not only friends, Nellies mother, uncles, borthers and sisters were poissoned by our neighbour, which has the land next and they donīt use for anything. By the way they are the owner of Siam Hotel in town. One day they put poission very tricky in plastic bags together with fried pork, without telling us, so we have to see eight of our dogs dieing very crowl, only Nelly survied this massaker. This is the other side of the friendly Thailand, cause still they greet us very friendly .......

Over the past 14 years we lost around 50 dogs!!!

The Older Ones:


Nelly & Dun

This is Nelly as a baby. Nelly was born in Sang Tong Huts in 1995 and she was the big boss untill 2004, then she lost her power to the young generation. Her youth was not easy, she survied the poisson and then, as one of a few dogs, distemper. At that time we didnīt have a vatinarien, so Toe has to help himself he tried it with Mekon (Thai whiskey) and very strong penecillin and she survied. Already as a young dog, Nelly travelled a lot. When Toe went to Germany, she stayed with Tiger, our friend, who had a guest house in Mae Lana, she cleaned up that area from the chickens and when Tiger moved to Pai, she went with him. Back in Sang Tong Huts, she was already pregnant and deliverd seven babies, 6 female and one male.
All of her children, grandchildren and grandgrandchildren are dead by now. Nelly is a extraordinary dog, for example she doesnīt like rice, but loves spaghetti. She is eating very slow, but none of the others has a chance to get her food. The hate the vat, cause he had to come a lot for her, her immunsystem is not very strong cause she survid distemper.
Nely is the only one who is allowed to sleep in bed, lay on the banch or sofa. But she is also able to change peoples mind about dogs. If you see her you will realize that she is having a happy live and is quite relaxed, only when the Jeep is starting, then she runs, cause going out is one of her favourits.

Dun is our smallest dog and a real watch dog. She was born in December 1996 in Sang Tong Huts. You will not hear her as she is living next to our house, only hear her, sometimes. In her younger days she really drives us nuts with her barking, but when somebody was comming, we already know it long before he arrive. Now she is getting old and more quiet. Deep in her heart she is a schmusy dog.

Sunny & Lauböng

are sister and brother. They were born christmas eve 2002. Sunny is like a carpeter, very hairy, but also like a pig. After she is getting a bath, she has to go into the dirt, so she looks the same as before.
Sunny is the mother of Bella, which was born in summer 2004. We found a tumor, against which she gets a treatment at the moment.

Bella und Sam

Bella
Sam, our youngster and only dog which was not born in Sang Tong Huts. He came from the corner shop up to Sang Tong Huts, to check whats going on there. He left and came back the next day, looked around and went back. On the third day he decided to stay. This is why we named him Sam, which means three in Thai.

Beside dogs and cats we have several other domestic animals, like ants, termites, mouses, geccos and so on .....
